PostSubject: Real pros and cons between value and moderate resort   Tue May 31, 2011 11:40 am

Being that we have only made one trip to Disney, I was wondering what all of you Disney "experts" think about the pros and cons of value vs. moderate resorts. I didn't include deluxe because I think they are such a great deal pricier that the differences are vast. Generally speaking, are the rooms way nicer at mods? Service, etc? Just curious. We loved CSR so much that I personally don't want to go anywhere else. There are so many out there that say "well you won't spend any time in your room, don't waste your money"...Well we actually like to enjoy our resort along with the fun of the parks...Can't wait to hear what you all think.

Since we live so close to WDW, when we stay there, we are there for the resort and not the parks. So the room is very important, however the pool is more important than the room to us.

The pools at the value resorts are themed very nicely, as are the mods. Besides each pool having different themes, the main difference in the pool would be water slides. Values do not have them, mods do.

As for the room, the square footage of the value resorts are slightly smaller. CSR and POFQ have queen size beds. POR is being refurbished to queen size, but presently most rooms have the same size beds as the values. I do not know if the Nemo rooms or Pirate rooms have full size or queen size beds? Maybe someone else can help out there.

The value rooms do not have refrigerators or coffee makers, all the moderate rooms do. No other mod resort has microwaves available, except for CSR.

CBR is totally full size beds at this time, including the nemo and pirate rooms. I'm not sure if there are plans to upgrade CBR to queens as well since they just went through a rehab.

We're not sure we could handle the value resorts - NO COFFEE MAKER!

We spent one night at Pop Century and have visited Pop and Allstars several times. Would I stay there again if it was the only way I could go to Disney - Absolutely!!

Was it for me? - No - not really.

The rooms were Ok - smaller but honestly I didn't think that made a difference. I do like having a refrigerator so if staying there - I would add that on and paying for it would probably annoy me.

I think for a trip of more than a few days I would miss the option of a sit down restaurant but that wouldn't make or break my decision to stay there. We could certainly make do without although I do prefer the option.

I think the main difference we seemed to notice was in the layout. I have stayed at 3 of the moderates and always felt like our room had a bit of seclusion. I didn't feel like we were right on top of other rooms - even though we were. I think it's in the layout.

I also seemed to notice other people and crowds more at Pop Century. The public areas always seemd to have more people around; the food court, the gift shop and even walking to and from our room - I felt like there were more people around. At the moderates - I didn't feel that way - it seemed better managed. Again - maybe in the layout.

I think once you fall in love with a resort - it's always hard to accept something else. But my husband seems to have a thing about trying out all the resorts so no matter what - I try to put CSR out of my mind and find something about the current resort that I really like. After all - I'm not at work and I'm at Disney. Wink

There are little differences at the mods and deluxes that make them worth our money. We like the covered bus stops, for one, and the water slides, as mentioned above, that are only at the the mods and deluxes. The deluxes are nice because they are all very close to at least one of the parks..when our DS was small, our resort of choice was WL since it was close to MK but not as expensive as the other deluxe resorts. We have stayed at Pop, and it was nice; in a pinch we would stay there again. If staying at at Value, SERIOUSLY consider paying for a preferred room. We were steps away from the lobby at Pop, and I would do that again. BTW, if the fridge is a medical necessity (I take an injection that needs to be in the fridge) they will waive the cost of the fridge at Pop. I would rather be in a Value Resort at Disney than at home!! That being said, if money isn't an option, we are at CSR. Heck, if money isn't an option, we are in a suite at The Beach Club or Contemporary!!!!

AJ's-I'm with you-if $$ was not a thought, we would totally be at Beach Club. I was giving DH prices for this August as an example for when we go next August and I priced out CSR and Pop to see what the $$ difference was. It was about a $600 difference and he said that we should just do Pop or one of the other values. That being said, we definitely like to enjoy our resort-especially the pools. Pools are a huge thing to us. I guess all of this is sort of equal to going on a cruise and trying to decide between inside stateroom, oceanview, or balcony. Trying to weigh all of our options but I have a feeling we'll be back at CSR or another mod-he has mentioned many times wanting to try POR. Kathiep, was there a huge difference in your opinion between WL and CSR?? Thanks everyone!

No; absolutely not. After the trip, both my husband and I could not justify paying the extra money to stay at WL. It felt very much like a moderate to us. I honestly think you could make a good argument that WL should be a moderate.

We felt similar to you about Saratoga Springs. I love it there. But CSR was every bit as nice and priced so much less. We always got a studio room as SSR. With a microwave at CSR, we had all the same room amentities as SSR, except a tiny freezer in the refrigerator. But the price was a huge difference.

As far as resort ammenities, the only things CSR was missing that SSR had was a community hall, basketball court and shuffleboard. We stayed at SSR 3 times. We used all that stuff the first time, but only the community hall all the other times. And we certainly can vacation without doing crafts, pool bingo or pool movies. Especially at $100 per night difference.

For us, not only is it the bigger beds, slides at the pool and a sit down place to eat if we choose (except for POFQ), we prefer the moderates 100 times more because it is just so much more peaceful and less busy. We did a value once for three nights and we asked to be changed to a moderate and we were switched to CSR. With the exception of one trip back to the Poly and a couple of nights coming up at the AKL, the CSR has become our home. The value was cute -- don't get me wrong. But our boys (who were younger at the time) missed having a slide at the pool, and DH and I could not handle all the "confusion and noise" at the food court and around the resort itself. We just prefer a more laid back vacation.

Since I have only stayed at the Value Resorts (So far..come on Nov. for CSR) I can throw a few things out there regarding Pop Century/All Stars.

If you are on a strict budget they really really are a Value. Especially off peak hours.

The Room:
Think a basic Holiday Inn room with Disney Accents. The family (2 adults, 2 kids) were comfortable. 2 full size beds. The bathroom was a tad small. Basically we did not spend all that much time in the room other than sleeping, and relaxing shortly while taking showers. If I was spending more off days from the park personally I would like a Moderate.

The Pool:
The Values have your basic larger pool and then usually a smaller quiet pool. Pools are themed to each resort. No Slides. There is a lot for kids to do as they have special games around the pool, Movie night and Nintendo night (Both done on an inflatable big screen around the pool). Great for smaller kids (ages 4-10) in my opinion.

Food Court:
If you dont mind the cafeteria on the go style there are some good dishes to be had here. The kids menu could have a few more choices, but the younger ones are usually happy with Pizza/burgers/sandwiches/mac & cheese. We have done the counter service plan a few times and it just fits our on the go style.

The big difference between WL and CSR, for us, is the childcare center. If you have little one, and want a night out, the child care center at WL is awesome. Now that our DS is old enough to hang with the big dogs, we are better off at CSR.
