Re-Imagined "Star Tours" Coming to California and Florida in 2011 and Major Fantasyland Expansion at Walt Disney World Scheduled for 2013

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo detailed plans for future lands, attractions and adventures that will be delighting Disney guests for years to come, at the first D23 Expo. Most notable among the announcements were the confirmation of an all-new Star Tours attraction and the largest expansion in the history of the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.

"Storytelling is the DNA of Disney dreams and we're always exploring new ways to tell new stories in new places," Rasulo told a crowd at the Anaheim Convention Center in California before taking them on a "behind-the-magic" tour of their favorite Disney destinations.

Rasulo announced that a new 3-D version of the tremendously-popular "Star Tours" attraction will debut at the Disneyland Resort and Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2011. Based on the iconic Lucasfilm "Star Wars" films, the attraction will include immersive new elements that will take guests to many familiar places in the Star Wars galaxy.

For Walt Disney World in Florida, Rasulo outlined plans for the largest expansion in the history of the Magic Kingdom, vastly increasing the size of Fantasyland by 2013. Guests will soon be able to:

* Visit their favorite Disney Princess in her castle, cottage, or chateau to share a dance with Cinderella; celebrate Sleeping Beauty's birthday with the Good Fairies; or join Belle in an enchanting story performance in the Beast's castle library.
* Be Our Guest and dine in one of three enchanted rooms inside the Beast's castle.
* Fly with Dumbo high above brand new circus grounds, twice the size of the existing attraction with a new interactive, three-ring circus tent.
* Journey under the sea with Ariel, The Little Mermaid, in her very own attraction - also opening at Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim in 2011.
* Meet Tinker Bell and her friends in the magical world of Pixie Hollow.

Dueling Dumbos has a certain Hidden Mickey look going in the model.

Below are the pics of the model and previously released (by Disney) rendering. The angles are a bit different, but it’s still fun to compare and contrast.

Fantasyland Expansion Model: A Closer Look

A few days ago, a picture of a Walt Disney Imagineering model for the upcoming Fantasyland Expansion at the Magic Kingdom was leaked on to the Internet. We have obtained the picture and have a number of new details to share about the parks’ largest expansion ever.

An overview of the entire model (you’ve probably seen this already): Since we saw the blueprints back in September 2009, some things have changed. The new “Dumbo the Flying Elephant” ride is going to be to the south of the Barnstormer now, leaving Pixie Hollow (in its newly updated form) to the north and next-door to the Little Mermaid attraction.

Beauty and the Beast Realm: Everything according to plan here. You can see the buildings for the meet-and greet and the connected buildings for “Be Our Guest” restaurant and Gaston’s Tavern behind the model facades.

The Little Mermaid Realm: The Little Mermaid dark-ride isn’t all this land has to boast. An Ariel meet-and-greet, the largest store of the Fantasyland Expansion, and (if the budget holds-up) a living character version of Sebastian the crab could be in the queue of the genuine Magic Kingdom E-Ticket.

Pixie Hollow: As we stated before, the model has a very different Pixie Hollow area from the original blueprints. Not only has the area moved, but the attractions in the area have been changed greatly. The building that will house the Pixie meet-and-greets is much bigger than the originally proposed Home Tree and is now attached to the show building for The Little Mermaid dark-ride. The huge building for the meet-and-greets isn’t a mistake, it’s because these meet-and-greets are supposed to be unlike anything ever seen before. The current plan is to use new living character technology to project the fairies into their natural habitat and have them interact with guests. We saw a short preview of this new technology in a Walt Disney Imagineering video released last year.

Also new for Pixie Hollow is a ride featuring “Cheese” the mouse, replacing the concept of a Pixie play area. This character from the Tinker Bell film series will take guests for a spin around part of Pixie Hollow after guests board from a queue made of oversized items (remember, you will be the size of one of the fairies when visiting Pixie Hollow). The ride will only be different in theme from the upcoming “Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree” at Disney’s California Adventure. Tinker Bell may even appear inside the giant lantern at the south end of the attraction as guests in vehicles spin from turntable to turntable.

Note that the new WDW Railroad station is rather plain, either because it borders both the Dumbo Circus area and Pixie Hollow, or simply because it has not been decided what the station should look like. The WDW Railroad will be closing for 3-4 months in 2010 to accommodate construction.

Dumbo’s Circus: The “Dueling Dumbos” have moved south to border the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway. Meanwhile, the new theme for Goofy’s Barnstormer is undecided. Rumors indicate that it may be a more modern version of the Casey Jr. Circus Train attraction, running on the same track as the current coaster.

Pooh and Princesses: This area remains very true to the original blueprints. The facade and shop of the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh attraction will be updated this year to reflect a “Hundred Acre Woods” theme and most of what is Pooh’s Playful Spot today is set to become a Winnie the Pooh character meet-and-greet. The Mad Tea Party will probably not see any changes until after the entire expansion is completed in 2013. The Cinderella meet-and-greet and princess/royal guard training as well as the Aurora meet-and-greet/birthday party are still very much what they were originally announced to be.

For those wondering about the placement of the Castle Walls that will separate the medieval fair from the fantasy forest, this picture should give you a good idea. The thatched roof you see on what is currently Mrs. Potts’ Cupboard is currently being put in place, so the first piece (although very minor) of the expansion is already being completed.

PostSubject: 2 builders hired for Disney World's Fantasyland expansion   Fri Feb 26, 2010 9:55 am

Walt Disney World has picked a pair of construction firms to lead an overhaul of the Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland section, the biggest-yet expansion of Disney's oldest and busiest theme park.

Disney has hired Barton Malow Co. of Southfield, Mich., and Birmingham, Ala.-based Hoar Construction LLC as general contractors on the Fantasyland project. They will oversee the work alongside Disney's own Buena Vista Construction Co.

Disney expects to break ground on the project this spring. Plans call for a major new ride based on The Little Mermaid, an expanded Dumbo ride, and elaborate sub-areas devoted to some of Disney's most popular princesses, along with new restaurants and shops.

With Universal Orlando's Wizarding World of Harry Potter scheduled to open in a matter of weeks following more than two years of construction, Disney's Fantasyland overhaul would take over as the largest construction project in local theme parks.

Disney says it expects to open the expanded Fantasyland in stages, beginning in 2012 with the Mermaid ride and the princess attractions. A second phase, anchored by a Pixie Hollow area featuring Tinker Bell and other Disney fairies, will open in 2013. Disney has dubbed the new area of Fantasyland "Fantasy Forest."

Both companies selected to be general contractors have Orlando offices and have done extensive work in the area.

Barton Malow's local projects range from Lockhart Middle School to baggage carousels at Orlando International Airport. Hoar's local projects include Thornton Park Central, the condo-and-retail project in downtown Orlando, and SoDo, a larger condo-retail project south of downtown.

A quick update…Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has officially broken ground for what will be the largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom Theme Park – Fantasyland.

There will be four Disney classic-inspired areas or neighborhoods to explore. And one of the most unique offerings in those neighborhoods will be new interactive Storybook adventures with your favorite Disney princesses.
Fantasyland Expansion

And parents take note…Dumbo the Flying Elephant, a beloved MK Attraction, will take center stage on its own new mini land with the addition of a second attraction. You’ll be invited to take part in a series of interactive experiences inside an air-conditioned three-ring circus tent. Of course, there’s much more to the expansion, but we wanted to share news of the groundbreaking with you first. Check the blog for future updates.

The expansion project is scheduled to be completed in 2013.

PostSubject: Disney to start construction of princess sets in Fantasyland expansion   Sun Mar 14, 2010 11:46 am

Walt Disney World, in the midst of early prep work for its Fantasyland expansion, has pulled permits for the three princess areas that will be built as part of the project.

A few weeks ago, amid other permits for to demolish some existing structures, Disney filed notices to start construction of Cinderella’s Chateau, Belle’s Village and Aurora’s Cottage. The company also filed notices to build a new restaurant (presumably the Be Our Guest restaurant or Gaston’s Tavern in the Beauty and the Beast area) and a gift shop in the same area.

The three princess locales, along with a ride based on fourth Disney princess, Ariel of The Little Mermaid, are part of the first phase of the Fantasyland project and are scheduled to open

Mickey's Toontown Fair to close for good in February

After originally being planned to occur a year earlier, Mickey's Toontown Fair will close its gates for good on February 11, 2011. It is believed that its original reprieve came when new Disney Parks Chairman Tom Staggs put a hold on much of the Fantasyland Forest expansion for reevaluation after he took over at the beginning of 2010. It now appears that the reworking of the plans for the huge expansion have been set, and Toontown Fair will be subsumed as originally planned.

With the closure, characters doing meet-and-greets in the Magic Kingdom's newest land will need to move elsewhere. In the spring of 2011, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and the princesses will move to the Town Square Exhibition Hall (which may receive a new name at that time), though they'll be doing meet-and- greets at locations top be determined throughout the Magic Kingdom until the new site is ready.

Tinker Bell's friends will be going to Epcot during the International Flower & Garden Festival to the Pixie Hollow Fairy Garden, while the original pixie herself will be relocating to Disney's Hollywood Studios. According to a Twitter post by Matt Hochberg of Studios Central (link), Tinker Bell is moving to the Journey Into Narnia building. The move of Tinker Bell to the Narnia building makes sense, as—with the Narnia movie series switching to Fox as of the latest installment—there's no real need for Disney to continue promoting the franchise.

In the original plans for the Fantasyland makeover, the Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm will survive the makeover, though it will be rethemed. The land will become home to two copies of Dumbo the Flying Elephant, with a new "queue-less" waiting system. While the timeline has changed, it is likely that the plans themselves have not changed.

While the Walt Disney World Railroad will stay open during the construction, the Toontown station will be closed. Expect it to reopen as the Fantasyland Station at the conclusion of the construction work. Most of the new Fantasyland Forest should be completed by 2013, with the early phases likely to be open by 2012.

Parts of the plan are starting to come together. Beast's Castle appears in Fantasyland at Disney's Magic Kingdom.

More Fantasyland plans showed during D23 event

Although this weekend's Destination D: Walt Disney World's 40th event, produced by Disney's D23 fan club, concentrated on Disney World past and present, there was a recap about the Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland expansion during a Sunday session..

Chris Beatty, Walt Disney Imagineering's creative director for the expanion, shared details, renderings and photos, including an overhead of the area.

•The new wall that divides Cinderella Castle from the rest of Fantasyland will run through where the Dumbo ride currently sits. It will look old. "It will look like it's always been there," Beatty said.

•The new dark ride called Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid is designed so that passengers will feel they've stepped into the storyline. They'll hear "Poor Unfortunate Souls" in Ursual's lair and "Part of Your World" in Ariel's Grotto. The area will be more green than current Fantasyland. "Water and trees and slopes are extremely important" in the look, Beatty said.

New Fantasyland expansion opening timeline

Complete - Hundred Acre Wood facade for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Early 2012 - Half of Storybook Circus with double Dumbo, Great Goofini coaster, Fantasyland Train Station, Casey Jr.
Late 2012 - Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid ride, Be Our Guest restaurant, Beauty and the Beast village, Belle meet-and-greet, Castle wall
Early 2013 - Remaining half of Storybook Circus with Pete’s Silly Sideshow
Late 2013 - Seven Dwarfs Mine Train roller coaster

Being in mid-2011 now, by the current projected timeframe, all phases of the New Fantasyland expansion won’t be completely open for roughly 2.5 years. Mallwitz did emphasize there will be “micro-phases” within each of these timelines, so not all attractions grouped together above will necessarily open at exactly the same time. With so many new attractions coming to the Magic Kingdom, it’s likely each major addition, such as The Little Mermaid ride and Be Our Guest restaurant, will open on the same day, but rather within a few weeks of each other.

We had already figured out that the new Dumbo spinner would be delighting guests by mid-February 2012, but now it sounds like the Barnstormer and the new Fantasyland train station will be ready as well for that date:

New Fantasyland (early 2012) – The largest expansion project in Magic Kingdom history will open in phases beginning February 2012 at Walt Disney World Resort, featuring attractions and experiences in an area that will nearly double the size of Fantasyland. Among the novelties, guests will be able to fly high with The Great Goofini or with Dumbo the Flying Elephant, “immerse” themselves in Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid and “be our guest” at the Beast’s Castle. Out of the gate in early 2012 will be The Barnstormer coaster, Fantasyland Station and – for the first time anywhere turning counter-clockwise – the first half of the Dumbo the Flying Elephant attraction. Completion of The New Fantasyland is scheduled for 2014 with most new experiences open by 2013.

That’s right, we are just two short months away from the Storybook Circus! Who’s excited?

PostSubject: Part of New Fantasyland’s Storybook Circus Will Open By Late March at MK   Fri Feb 24, 2012 12:17 pm

Who’s ready for an update on New Fantasyland? I just heard that the first elements of Storybook Circus will open by late March, marking the first in a series of progressive openings for the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom Park history.Among the first experiences to open will be one carousel of Dumbo the Flying Elephant, a re-themed Barnstormer starring the Great Goofini and the Fantasyland Station of the Walt Disney World Railroad.

The construction walls around the brand new Fantasyland Train Station are now down, giving guests a glimpse into Storybook Circus and the Barnstormer area. This area is expected to open later this month, so is very near to completion.

Another change in the construction wall positioning has taken place near the entrance of Storybook Circus by the Teacups attraction. The walls here are now lower, exposing the inner construction walls that we first saw in a previous aerial photo.

Head to the photos for a look at both these areas, and as always, click the thumbnails to view the large versions.
