In some hotels I've stayed in you just wave a plastic card in front of a 'reader' where the door lock used to be. I suspect it'll be something similar.

Disney has announced that they are in the process of updating door locks at WDW resorts to a new wireless, RFID based system, over the next year.

As part of the transition, KTTW cards will be changing to the new RFID technology.

Currently the following resorts have been converted and are using the new cards:
Art of Animation
Contemporary
BoardWalk
Yacht & Beach Club

Further info is that Guest Relations locations have begun using the new KTTW cards also, meaning Guests at any WDW resorts may be issues one of the new cards.

Design of the new cards has changed a little...

RFID technology allows guests to merely tap their key card on a panel to unlock the hotel room or villa without having to physically swipe the card through a magnetic card reader. In addition to being a moderately simpler entry system for guests to utilize, a recent Orlando Sentinel story claims that the RFID door locks are more durable and less succeptible to moisture, dust and other contaminants which cause the current card readers to fail.

RFID entry systems are already being utilized on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy cruise ships, as well as the $350 million Art of Animation Resort which opens this week. The technology is also a cornerstone of Disney's so-called "Next Gen" enhancements planned throughout its Florida theme parks. Disney is in the process of testing modifications to its park entry turnstiles, FASTPASS ride reservation system and other park additions which will utilize the RFID technology.

Thanks for all the info! We use this at work for keeping up with inventory, and Taylor just started his volunteer time at our library today, and they had him tagging books with RFID tags. Can't wait to see what other innovations they can come up with for this.

How do these work at the parks then? Are there still magnetic strips so you put them through the turnstiles as normal, or do all the parks have RFID entry too?

I don't think they are magnetic strips anymore. I believe they have a chip inside.

How exciting... can't wait to try them out. Stayed in a Hyatt a few months ago for work and they had them.
