PostSubject: Cantina de San Angel restaurant is expanding, adding a spot to watch Illuminations   Sat Mar 13, 2010 8:18 am

Another construction wall at Epcot, this time it’s at the Mexico Pavilion along the World Showcase Lagoon waterfront. The popular Cantina de San Angel restaurant is expanding, and when the wall comes down there will be 400 seats – both al fresco and air-conditioned seating for lunch and a coveted spot for dinner and viewing IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, the nightly Epcot fireworks spectacular. A table-service restaurant will occupy half the space.

We hear that the tall frozen margaritas stay on the menu when the new eatery opens in the fall, just in time for the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Until then, you can get your guacamole fix inside at San Angel Inn, or at La Cava de Tequila, with 95 varieties of tequila to taste (our preference is the buttery avocado margarita, the richness cut with fresh lime juice and agave nectar syrup). If you’re just passing by, the Taqueria del Lago kiosk serves Mexican favorites such as nachos and mixes a delicious margarita for sipping and strolling.

We have high hopes for a fresh menu, and expect delicious south-of-the border creations from the folks at San Angel Inn LLC, who have run both the outside eatery and the pavilion’s San Angel Inn for a quarter of a century.

What a terrific change. I am so excited about this. Although the suggested opening states "fall", here's to hoping it's ready the last week of August for our trip!

I can't wait to try it with the new area too. Plus I have to try the tequila bar!

Earlier today, WDW shared a first look at an amazing pizzeria opening at Epcot Italy Pavilion. And now they got a sneak peek of what you can expect to see when the construction wall comes down at the Mexico Pavilion later this year. If you’ve visited Epcot recently, you know the Cantina de San Angel restaurant is expanding. This artist rendering gives you a good idea of what seating looks like at the restaurant when work is completed. There will be 400 seats – both al fresco and air-conditioned seating for lunch and a coveted spot for dinner and viewing IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth.

More in Mexico

Over in the Mexico Pavillion, the lagooon-side Cantina de San Angel Restaurant has been completely torn down and is being rebuilt. Once open again this fall, the 12,000-square-foot restaurant will offer 400 seats. The space will be nearly four times larger than before. This will be Disney World’s first flex-service restaurant. Disney research has shown that guests prefer a quick lunch while spending a day at the parks and enjoy a nice table-side restaurant in the evening. As a result, the new restaurant will serve quick service meals during the day. Then, in the evening hours the restaurant will be converted into a table-side restaurant where reservations are recommended. About half of the seats will be indoors and half outdoor. The lagoon-side seats will be especially popular during the nightly IllumiNations fireworks show.

The indoor and outdoor eateries in Mexico are run by the San Angel Inn company (same company that operates the food areas at CSR). They’ve been providing Mexican cuisine to Walt Disney World guests for more than 25 years.

Both the Mexico and Italy restaurants should be open in time for the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.

I am confused Buzz. Are they expanding the Cantina out front or the Main restaurant/Temple behind it. It would be a shame if they are knocking down the temple with the Volcano, quaint market place and of course the e Cabilleros boat ride.

They are expanding the cantina (lakeside), not the main restaurant.

We just heard more details and got a peek at the menus for the all-new La Hacienda de San Angel and the adjacent La Cantina de San Angel. La Cantina gets a facelift and stays!

The new 250-seat La Hacienda will only be open for dinner and expands the South-of-the Border offerings. The La Cantina opens daily at 11 a.m. with 150 outdoor seats.

The new La Cantina menu will initially offer chicken and beef tacos on fresh handmade corn tortillas, nachos, a cheese empanada, guacamole and chips and churros.

La Hacienda will open daily at 4 p.m. and the initial menu will feature starters like queso fundido (warm cheese with poblano pepper and chorizo); a taco trio with rib eye, roasted chicken and pork; and traditional black bean soup. Entrées include a mixed grill for two with flank steak, chicken, chorizo and vegetables (a seafood version features grouper, shrimp and scallops); roasted shrimp in pepper garlic broth; flank steak with spring onions, refried beans and cactus leaves; and grilled red snapper with roasted corn and cactus leaves. Dessert? Chocolate churros, sweet tamales and fruit empanadas.

Disney backs off flex-serve dining venue

Slated to be the first flexible service restaurant at Walt Disney World offering quick-service food at lunch and table service for dinner (with the venue split into an all-day 150-seat quick service location and a 250-seat dinner-only table service venue), La Hacienda de San Angel will not go that route after all. It is unsure whether the loss of the pilot location will have any impact on the plans for the Be Our Guest restaurant scheduled to open in the Beast's Castle in the Fantasyland Forest expansion slated to open in 2012.

Splitting the location will mean a respite for La Cantina de San Angel, which was to be replaced by the new La Hacienda. La Cantina will open daily with World Showcase at 11 a.m. and feature chicken and beef tacos, nachos, cheese empanadas, churros, and guacamole, and chips. The location will feature outdoor seating.

La Hacienda will open daily at 4 p.m. and will feature a variety of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Appetizers will include queso fundido, a taco trio with three different meats and black bean soup. Among the entrees will be a mixed grill for two, a seafood mixed grill, roasted shrimp, flank steak and grilled red snapper. Desserts include chocolate churros, sweet tamales and fruit empanadas.

Thank you for the info! We have been wondering if there was a spot to reserve seats for the Illuminations. We did the dessert party at MK and loved to be able to not worry about getting a seat for Wishes. We are going in June and will be making our ADRs in December. Will we be able to book seating there for the Illuminations at that time. How do we go about doing it? I am just curious how this will work. Thank you!
