PostSubject: Reserving Dinners With Credit Cards....   Sat Jun 12, 2010 7:00 am

Just thought I would share this with everyone here...I booked our Spirit of Aloha dinner show last week on the phone. First off, I could tell right away she was new. She was very nice, but a little confused. First thing I told her was that we were on the dining plan for August when we come. She booked us in category 1 of the show. I immeditately told her that when on the dining plan we cannot be booked in category 1-we have to be put in 2 or 3 (which I had just read online). She changed it two times after repeatedly putting me on hold-still no big deal. She then asked for a credit card to guarantee the whole thing-which I knew they did for shows like this just to make sure that we show up, etc. The last thing I said was hey, make sure you are just guaranteeing this and not charging-she said oh now you won't be charged...Well fast forward to a week later and of course we were charged $220 on our card!! I called dining and got the nicest lady who at first told me that the night was already booked and no way could she "re-book" our show but could get our credit back on our card. Long story, we got our credit to our card and got to keep reservations...They were very nice-she apologized many times but in the end it all worked out and hey, I make mistakes everyday so how could I get irrate with someone else when it was easily fixed..Moral of my waay too long story (sorry!) is MAKE SURE they understand not to charge for these when on dining plan.....

I'm with you, mistakes can happen and blowing up isn't going to make the situation any better. As long as it was corrected, that is all that matters.

Yikes!! Sometimes thos credits can take an AWFUL long time to get back to the card!! Sometimes I complain that my DH works for the bank and watches our credit card like a hawk, but in a case like this it would have paid off. I actually booked CRT on line, and had to put my CC info in to guarantee it. The computer knew what to do, thank goodness!

Well to be honest-I said credit card but it was actually our Visa Debit! So there I was going over our checking acct and knew something was "off"...So I told her that I had to have that $$ put back as it was not in our budget to be taken out in the first place! I read online that it's a bad idea to use debit cards to guarantee hotels, etc. If your DH works for a bank then he probably has an opinion on that! We try and use credit cards as little as possible but in this case at least it wouldn't have been our actual dollars taken out.

Umm, DH's opinion on using Visa debit to guarantee anything...hmm, how to put this...DON'T DO IT!!!!!

AJ's-I was wondering if debit cards were easier to get into? I will have to stop doing this-a lot of times for hotels I will guarantee on a card but pay in cash and that seems to throw hotel clerks way off base-I guess paying cash is becoming outdated..I guess your DH sees a lot of crazy things though. My best friend had a strange thing happen just last year-they had .23 cents taken out of their savings, then .50 cents...Then the next week $23,000 was taken!!! The bank caught it before they did and knew it looked suspicious. Thankfully their $$ was put back with no troubles..I will remember about the debit card now though...

My DH advises against Visa/MC debit cards for stuff that says "free for 30 days", "free trial" or anything if that nature, as they are usually going to be automatic charges when the trial is up. He also doesn't let me use them to guarantee anything. He also has issues with TD, since they will let you over-draw your ATM account, and then charge you huge over draft fees. You just need to be careful, as there not as many protections for the consumer with the Visa/MC ATM cards as there are with the actual credit cards.

you know I did my ADRs all online this year, and was able to do it with no problems. While I absolutely LOVE calling Disney and talking to their most amazing CMs on the phone, it was something I wanted to try out. It didn't make any mistakes (and neither did I even though it was the very wee hours of the morning!) and I didn't get charged for anything either!

good thing you got your issue taken care of!

Yes, so happy that they were so nice about it! When I called about all of this on Fri, she told me that it would take 5 days to get back in my acct-I checked today and they put it back in at midnight last night! I think I have learned my lesson about when/where to use debit. Now I am re-thinking using it to put on my room card while at Disney...

We don't use a debit for our room charge. We give them a credit card and pay cash each day on the account so that the CC isn't charged. Sounds dumb, but DH insists.

OH one more thing AJ'sMommy-my precious precious Eagles are playing in two days in Raleigh-which is a three hr drive for us and we'll be in Raleigh that day anyway and I cannot go..I am sad beyond words, no kidding..When are you going? Have you already seen them? I am sick about it..Oh well, maybe if Hell Freezes Over again I can go..LOL We have much in common with our music and our sons loving Pokemon so much-too bad we aren't going to Disney at the same time, we could have met up for dinner one night! Anyway I am sacrificing my Eagles for our Disney trip, if that's the worst thing I have to complain about I guess I'm doing great!!! Tink

PostSubject: Debit cards vs. Credit cards   Mon Jun 21, 2010 5:09 pm

Use credit cards for any purchases that you might have a issue with. Debit cards immediately transfer cash from your accounts and do not have any leverage to question a transaction. I use debit cards with companies that I know well (like I know the owners first name), especially small local businesses because they don't have to pay extra charges that incur with credit cards.

Credit cards are best to guarentee dining reservations where required.

Debit cards work fine at WDW to leave on the room for room purchases. CM's have no access to those numbers and only what you charge to the room has any potential of being charged from your bank accounts. No charges are actually made to your accounts until either, you hit the resort charging limit written on the registration you sign at check in, or until about 6AM on your departure date if you opt for express check out. If you want to pay cash for your room charges simply tell the front desk cast member that you do NOT want express check out, or stop by the front desk before 6 am of your check out day. We are happy to accept whatever form of payment you prefer. Cash is more complicated than credit for CM's because we have to account for any cash, whereas the system automatically tracks all charge transactions.

In these days of economic uncertainty, more people are using cash, including me. It is your right to ask any front desk CM how billing and payment is accomplished........it is your money, and we respect that.

I use my debit card because I am not willing to use a credit card at this juncture of my life. I keep track of my account almost hourly (on my phone) because I'm obsessed with making sure the balance in my check book matches that of my bank statement. I've done two Disney trips so far on that card, with no problems.

I have been making all my purchases using my Disney CC to earn Reward Bucks for our trip. It is really easy to pay those charges right off with online banking and then we have the money to use on our trip!
